HARRISONBURG — Massanutten Regional Library is accepting entries for the 22st annual Robert B. and Gladys Hopkins Strickler Honored Teachers Essay Contest.


The library began accepting submissions Tuesday, according to a press release.


The contest was started by Robert Hopkins Strickler and his wife, Lorraine Warren Strickler, 1997 in memory of his parents. His father, Robert, was the principal of Broadway High School between 1922 and 1939. His mother, Gladys, taught English.


Members and of the Harrisonburg Kiwanis Club will judge the essays.


Prizes will be awarded to the top two essays in four grade ranges: kindergarten through second, third through fi fth, sixth through eighth, and ninth through 12th.


The winning essay in each of the elementary and middle school grade ranges will win $125, and the runner- up will receive $75.


The winner of the high school group will be given $ 250 while the second- place winner will earn $ 100.


One of the teachers honored in the winning essays will also be named " Honored Teacher of the Year" and receive $ 1,000.


Kindergartners through 12thgraders living or attending school in the city or two counties can submit an essay that focuses on a current or past teacher by visiting www.mrlib.org/honored


Essays must be submitted by 4 p.m. on Feb. 10. The winners and teachers will be recognized at 7 p.m. on Feb. 22 at the Central Library in downtown Harrisonburg.



We meet every Tuesday at 12:00 pm for the meal and the program begins at 12:30 pm
